I aim to write about what I know through experience or in conclusion by spending considerable time reading and reflecting. In that, I hope to offer you something that may be of use in your personal lives too!
Today, I am cast into my experience of a complex journey, I had trouble getting to the bottom of. After nearly 8 years of elder care and a personal mishap, at the beginning of this year, my body began to shut down in protest. One morning I awoke lame and in considerable discomfort. Having lived through the ravishment of Lyme’s disease, I immediately thought, grrrr the blighter is back! My go-to solutions did not yield results, but in May my charge passed away at 94. As she was a hoarder, I undertook to clean out the home. 10 days of dawn to dusk work which yielded: a tightly stuffed 30 YD dumpster, 3 Furniture trucks to Goodwill, and 8 cars loaded front seats, back seats, and trunk jam-packed (also to goodwill), one had the impression the one could breathe in the house. The aside here is clean out as you go. The clothes from the 1970s forward had long ago served their purpose and could have been useful to others had they been disposed of then. Hopefully, some theater troops will benefit from our deposit.
My health was still dodgy, My shoulder ceased, my hips giving issues, and my hands and feet were like lumps of lead at the end of their respective Appendages. I read “The Myth of Normal”, and “The Divided Mind” both works that I felt gave insight into the psychological backgrounds of some prevalent health issues
Leaving my stepmother’s house, I stayed at the farm where I lived before the call of “duty”, and immersed myself in fun chores in my wood shop. Along with my remedies my mental state improved as did my physical condition. I was not “there” so to speak, but felt I was going in the right direction. i.e. I cleared my mind of the weight imposed by my indenture in care.
On an evening out with my gym rat friends, I broke a tooth. The next day I was at the dentist on an emergency basis. X-rays revealed a serious infection in my upper and lower jaw, to the point that I was in the operating room the next day getting 3 teeth extracted and bone grafts inserted to replace bone loss.
The remarkable thing is that since the 3.5-hour surgery (no Fun) my tiredness has become noticeably less. My stiffness in my shoulders and knees reduced. It seems the dental infection could have played havoc with my well-being
So what’s the point of all this? What lessons have I drawn?
One cannot abdicate one’s life to another without consequences.
If your body is hurting, reject the painkillers and seek what the root cause could be.
If you have a toothache, get it examined, it could be critical, as in my case.
And finally, commit to being well rather than acquiesce to being a patient.
As has been stated many times, life will challenge you, it’s how you meet the challenge that brings the rewards.
Wishing you good health and an open mind to challenge things, in your interest.
