The liquid gold has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. We’re talking back to the Ancient Egyptians who used the nectar to treat wounds and the gut (Al-Jabri, 2005)! However, why is Manuka honey becoming so popular?
Let’s take a nutritional view on Manuka honey vs regular honey.
As we can see a 20g of serving from each honey provides a very similar nutritional value. Alas, we can deduct nutritional benefits being the main cause of Manuka’s claim to fame. Let’s read on.
It can cure your wounds!
Manuka Honey has been heavily researched in recent years. This is primarily because of its phenolic and methylglyoxal properties. They are some big words, but in essence, these two compounds are responsible for Manuka’s high antibacterial activity (Johnston, et al., 2018).
So, what does all this mean?
It is believed that medical-grade Manuka Honey can be used to treat wounds and repair the skin. In fact, a 2015 study revealed that there was substantial evidence that Manuka Honey can heal ‘partial-thickness burns around 4 to 5 days more quickly than conventional dressings’ (Jull, et al., 2015).
But oh honey, can manuka do so much more (it’s hard to believe, we know).
The honey contains anti-inflammatory properties alas, it can help reduce swelling caused by acne. There’s more. Remember the antibacterial activity we mentioned earlier? These same properties help to fight bacteria found in your pores, be rid of them, leaving less chance for the bacteria to infect your skin and cause an outbreak (Ginta, 2018).
Lastly, on acne, Manuka has a low pH balance (Gethin, et al., 2008) which means, as well as freeing your skin of free radicals, it can also speed up the acne healing process!
Rightly so, Manuka Honey is on the popularity rise. Armed with such huge health benefits that it’s difficult to see why it shouldn’t. It really is the bees-knees.
Manuka Honey comes from bees that pollinate the manuka bush, also known as the tea tree. The bees collect the nectar from the flowers, which they transform into honey. The resulting honey contains much higher levels of antioxidants and antibacterial properties than typical honey. Reason why is known as Powerful Healing Honey.
While all honey has antibacterial properties, Manuka Honey is unique in that, it contains an additional ingredient called Methylglyoxal. Methylglyoxal is a compound found in Manuka Honey that makes it more beneficial for wound care and Healing skin injuries. It also gives the honey a distinctively bitter flavor.
How We Discovered The Powers Of Manuka Honey
Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately), we learned just how much of a powerhouse manuka honey is the hard way.
I, Gjoko, like to ride my bike every day. It’s my passion. It’s my bread to my butter. But. One day, I had a fall. Faceplant, I believe, is the correct term.
I’ll (happily) spare you the gruesome details but to paint a vague picture: blood was shed. Luckily, I wasn’t concussed, or, I was still conscious enough to remember that I had some Manuka honey (from a recent trip I took to New Zealand where the Manuka tree flowers and alas Manuka honey is produced). So, when I returned home, I applied it directly to the faceplant-affected area.
Low and Bee-hold
In a few short days, my face was completely healed! Had I just made a million-dollar discovery? Well, that’s not for me to share. But I can share with you Honey for Healing – and it really works!
Our Manuka Honey
Ever heard of UMF? It stands for Unique Manuka Factor. It was a term coined by scientists to identify the quality mark of natural unadulterated manuka honey (produced in New Zealand). The identifier tests a range of properties in the honey, including purity (Manuka Corner, n.d.). 15+ High potency to support your body in its everyday health & wellness.
All of our honey rates are in the 15+ UMF range. A Manuka Honey that has a UMF score of 15+ is presumed to have potent antibacterial properties , it’s purer and so will heal your wounds quicker!
HONEY for HEALING® started off as an idea for a natural remedy to help open wounds. It grew to something much more. My passion turned to Manuka honey because the medicines we receive over the counter are chemical-filled-and-often-not-super-effective. When there’s a natural remedy that works wonders and has no nasties, who wouldn’t want to give it a try?
Well, our customers tried. And their results were astonishing. Customers came back to us saying our honey cream worked on their skin. It turned their skin from dry, broken, and tired-looking to rejuvenated, plump, and hydrated! Wrinkles appeared reduced, and smiles grew all around.
I learned about the wonders of Manuka the hard way; you don’t have to. Use it to help a wound. Use it to moisturize your skin. It has a magnitude of uses and, they all work!
